Although this blog started out as a daily update on Chris Johnson's heart surgery, I am using it now to post about the happenings in my life since Chris died. You can email me at mjmj57@bellsouth.net.

Although it has been a good day we have hit a bump in the road. Around 7pm the drs. and nurses decided that Chris needed to go back on the ventilator. Chris was doing the deep breathing and trying to cough, but it was really zapping his strength, so they decided to give him at least another night to rest. He still has a bit of a fever so cultures have been taken and infectious diseases will check on him tomorrow-they want to be sure to have the right antibiotics on board if he does have an infection. He heart rhythm has come back down and his blood pressure is back up. He is getting fluids and they will probably give him a unit of blood to help things along. Chris was not happy going back on the vent, but was struggling so much to breathe that I am glad he will have more time to gain strength. His nurse, Diane, assured us that things are stable with Chris-he just needs more time. Tomorrow is another day and hopefully Chris's road to recovery will continue on the straight and narrow. Thanks for all the prayers and words of encouragement-they really help. Mary Jo

I wish you guys weren't so far away. The blog is great and we appreciate the updates...however, a good old fashioned hug would be wonderful. Even though setbacks are to be expected recouperating from a major surgery - I'm sure it is still scary. Chris is in skilled and caring hands and most importantly has most of the Ohio Valley praying for him! Send our love to Chris on your next visit. Sleep Tight.
Love,
Carolyn & Reid
It's 1:00 am in Georgetown, KY. I have just read your latest blog. I'm sure Chris will gain strength and get back off the ventilator in his own good time. May it be of some comfort for you to know that prayers are being whispered, late at night, in your direction. Rest in His grace, Willow Hambrick
I'm so sory about the set back, but at least the Nurses and Doctors are aware of the needs and have made the necessary moves to assist Chris in getting his strength back to breathe on his own. In time he'll be off again and be able to make things happen again for himself. Hopefully, this is just a minimal setback and his recovery will continue to improve over time.
I know it is hard to deal with a setback but knowing you are getting the best care possible at Mayo makes it easier. Chris will get stronger & fight through this. Hopefully today will be a brighter day on his road to recovery. We all think of you often. The kids are very concerned & ask every day how Uncle Chris is doing and pray for him every night. I wish I could be there to help you through this difficult time. We love & miss you all.

In the medical world going back on the vent is not necessarily a set-back but more of a re-grouping. He is doing so well that they probably rushed a bit and the added rest he will get on the ventilator will serve to strengthen him. Thoughts and prayers coming your way. Good luck with that belt!
